Where doesn the name ‘Bender’ come from?

The word Bender has an interesting history that goes back earlier than the 1300s. It originally
related to other words that include to bond, bind, and band.
From around 1728, like so many words, it evolved to having more of a social meaning—such as
a social bend or drinking bout. Some historians think it may refer to the act of bending one’s
elbow to take a drink.
In the 1980s, pop star Boy George reclaimed the word in a positive light, referring to himself and
others as Benders, despite its derogatory connotation towards gay people at the time.
Reclamation is very important today—to take away something from the bullies and enjoy the
original, deeper history of a fun word.

Who is the app aimed at?

Bender is designed for the LGBTQ+ community, from the age of 18 upwards, regardless of
gender.
It aims to enhance the dating experience for all users.

Is the app aimed at the whole LGBTQ+ community?

Yes. The app is for the entire LGBTQ+ community and for anyone who identifies as gender
fluid.
It does not ask users to provide pronouns to avoid any suggestion of discrimination.

Is there a web-based access as well as the mobile app?

Currently, Bender is mobile-only due to its reliance on a user’s location.
A web version may be released in the future.

Yes. Bender uses the latest SMS authentication for signup and login to prevent fake profiles
and bots.
Admins can also remove and monitor unauthorised users.
